My essay came back to me, and....

...I really don't know what to say. There I was, struggling with deep meaning, imagery, symbolism--too much pride (I really need to get a grip on that)--writing stuff people didn't get, because whatever I thought I was saying wasn't what was getting through. But that "green" essay? "The Day I Realized I Liked Green" totally got me a 98.

It's the most hackneyed, cliched, purple-prose, literary wannabe bit of angst-ridden tripe I've ever written, complete with 100% on the nose dialog. Little did I know, under the bushel where I hide my light, there actually "is" a light. I thought the woman was going to chew me up one side and down the other.

She patted me on the back instead--it was too weird.

...your imagery throughout was very effective, and the way you develop ideas is engaging. Well done!

Huh?

My mouth totally dropped open. *happy dance* After years and years, I finally "got" college level writing.

Woo-hoo that is fantastic! Congrats on your grade.

Writing is a strange beast. Just as likely to purr under your hand as pick you off in your sleep...

And here I was hoping it wouldn't eat me when I wasn't looking. But...I think I was eaten long ago, but I'm too stubborn to fall down and die. :)

Lol. Take it from someone who's been there for about four years, you can sure impress some people with purple prose. But I'm guessing yours *has* depth, meaning, and so on, so it probably walked the line on the better side of pretty writing. I'd love to read it if you want to post or send...

With Christmas money I paid a good editor and friend to help me remember how to wipe off some of my purple prose and get on to clearer writing, still maybe somewhat "literary." But I agree with Hailey, writing's a strange beast.

Congratulations on the good grade!

Thanks, Deanna. NOT that I think you need help on being a fabulous writer. You're so luminous. I like reading your stuff because it calms me down (hard, since I'm always wound up) lol, I just know people are going to look at this essay years from now and wonder what I was thinking, but...
