...more churches

Virginia is an old state, and I guess I didn't appreciate it at the time, but...churches don't look the same here, all plate glass and drywall. Most of the churches in Virginia date from the early eighteen hundreds, all acid stained marble and copper. Before I left, I'm glad I took pictures although I felt kind of funny standing in the middle of High Street.

I love the doors, and cast iron stairs. (they're real metal! Supposedly if the Devil tried to cross them, his hooves would burn)

And since there was a church on every corner, they stood a good chance of getting him.

There are little churches...

And big churches...

It's age and grandeur, and the enormous weight of history pressing down like humidity. It's...pretty cool.

They sure don't make churches like they used to. Nice pics, Jodi.

lol, thank you. I think I'll make it a hobby and go around photographing churches. :)

I love grand old churches. These are great pics. As to making it a hobby, better than Mr. Al's hobby; photographing grave stones just cause they look cool.

Those are breathtakingly awesome. I love the steps in the first photo. I'd get chills just walking up them.

Wonderful photos!

Unhingey? Are you sure you're not the devil in disguise, lol?? They actually clank when you walk on them, very cool. Although with the rust issues, I'd think they'd have to have them restored soon. The steeple in the third picture was recently redone in hammered copper. It took years to have it done.

lol Alice!!!! I have pictures of crypts! I'll scan some tomorrow and put them up. They are so nifty, all goth and Morticia Addams like. (from Richmond of course.)

It is cool. You're dealing with a whole different animal now. There's a reason why Eudora Welty didn't leave Mississippi.
You know, my feet were a little warm the last time I went to church...
