Old YA Favorites

I'm sleep-deprived and in info-overload, so to fuzz my brain, I re-read Mara, daughter of the Nile. Okay, lying there--I re-read the good parts, y'know, where Mara first meets Sheftu, and later, when he tries to kill her, and they kiss for the first time. *sigh*

I've been trying to find a copy of the Dark is Rising.
Back when I was a kid, the series was out on cassette, and it was wonderful--like a movie with the pictures missing. "It'll be cold tonight, Will Staunton." I just found out--someone made a movie! And I missed it. Sort of like I almost missed Hellwalker because it was called Constantine. I think I might have seen the commercials--people said, "oh, it's a Harry Potter rip-off". But hey, now--Susan Cooper did her Dark Series long before Rowling came along.

If someone had told me it was based on the Susan Cooper books, I'd have been there on opening night. As it is--I had to order it from Amazon. I'm kind of worried. The Narnia books were beautifully done, but the Earthsea books made a bad mini-series. (and I'd always had a thing for Ged.) I watched the preview, and why I never thought it'd be updated, I don't know.

It's based on folklore--Wayland Smith, the barrow-wrights, rooks and the Green Man. Probably why I'm fascinated with pre-history.

Now if someone other than Disney could do the Black Cauldron--I'd be a happy camper.

I'm not surprised the Earth Sea trilogy didn't translate well into film. Much of what makes it interesting is in what was not written. I learned that while reading it to my son.
